What is Melasma, and How is it Different from Blemishes?

Melasma differs slightly from the simple phenomenon of excessive melanin production and deposition in the skin.

One of the characteristics of melasma is the excessive activation of pigment cells called melanocytes deep within the skin.

The melanin produced in this way can spread repeatedly over a wide area.

Melanin penetrates into the dermis, taking on the form of a complex pigmentation disorder that persists for a long time.

External factors such as UV exposure or hormonal changes can also stimulate melanocytes.

In this process, it is common for subtle inflammatory reactions or vascular-related factors within the skin to complexly influence each other.

Unlike simple freckles, a pigment pattern that spreads widely with indistinct borders is one of the main characteristics of melasma.

Histological examination usually confirms that the number of melanocytes falls within the normal range;

however, in many cases, the size of these pigment cells or their branch-like dendritic structures show a distinctly expanded form.

This leads to melanin being more actively and widely transferred to surrounding cells.

In such cases, it is sometimes referred to as 'vascular melasma'.
